Travel Insurance for Quarantine – Coverage and Comparison

However, keep in mind that travel insurance for quarantine will only cover costs that are incurred because a doctor has advised you to quarantine. Quarantine insurance is not travel insurance for countries on the quarantine list because it will not cover quarantining as an entry requirement.

While looking for quarantine insurance, make sure you also get good travel insurance that covers COVID-19. Some countries, like Costa Rica, require visitors to have quarantine insurance, which is why we went with Heymondo for our last trip to this beautiful country in Central America.

Heymondo is the best option if you’re looking for quarantine insurance, but there are many other options, as you will see in this guide. Keep reading to find out more about the best travel insurance with quarantine coverage.

Quarantine Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance quarantine coverage is comprehensive and covers a wide variety of fees associated with quarantining. The best travel insurance companies offer policies that cover all of these categories.

The most important aspect of travel insurance that covers quarantine costs is coverage for accommodation fees if you need to extend your stay in your hotel or accommodation due to quarantine.

Paying for room and board out of your own pocket when you have to quarantine for 10 or 14 days can get incredibly pricey, so having quarantine insurance can save you a ton of money and hassle. Some insurance policies have a coverage limit per day, while others have an overall coverage limit. Either way, your accommodation fees should be covered.

Coverage for extended accommodation fees due to quarantine can be included under trip delay, trip interruption, or emergency medical expense coverage depending on the insurance.

Being required to quarantine by a doctor will most likely delay or even derail your trip plans. That’s where quarantine travel insurance with trip delay, trip interruption, and trip cancellation coverage comes in.

Trip delay coverage applies if you are traveling to or returning from your trip and you are delayed by more than 5 hours due to quarantining. Trip delay covers accommodation as well as other reasonable expenses, such as meals and telephone calls.

Trip interruption coverage can kick in when you are forced to interrupt your trip due to a doctor-ordered quarantine after you have already departed. Most insurance policies will reimburse you for at least 100% of your insured trip cost, although some will even cover 150%.

Trip cancellation coverage applies if you are required to quarantine and forced to cancel your trip prior to departure. Your quarantine travel insurance will then reimburse you for the cost of your trip.

All of these options are very real possibilities if a doctor advises you to quarantine, so make sure you’re covered with travel insurance for quarantine.

If a doctor has advised you to quarantine, you will most likely need some kind of medical treatment and may even require medical transport. Quarantine insurance that covers emergency medical expenses and medical evacuation will ensure that you don’t have to pay for any medical treatment fees out of your own pocket.

Cost of Travel Insurance that Covers Quarantine

The price of your travel insurance with quarantine coverage depends on several different factors. Your age, country of residence, state (if you live in the US), the length of your trip, and trip cost can all affect the cost of quarantine insurance.

In order to compare the price of travel insurance for quarantine, we’re using the example of a 30-year-old American male who lives in Pennsylvania and is traveling to Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $2,500. You can check our guide to Mexico reopening for travel if you want to know more about Mexico’s entry requirements.

Best Quarantine Insurance

Out of all the insurance policies I compared, Heymondo is the best quarantine travel insurance by far. Their plan has the best coverage-to-price ratio since they offer a high amount of coverage in all categories while still being affordable.

They are also the only company that doesn’t require travelers to pay their medical fees out of pocket before being reimbursed. Instead, Heymondo pays travelers’ medical expenses directly.

Of course, all of the other insurance policies have their own advantages too, so let’s get into each company’s plans and coverage.

1. Heymondo, the best quarantine insurance

Heymondo is definitely the best travel insurance with quarantine coverage. They offer the highest amount of coverage for emergency medical expenses and trip cancellation and provide coverage for trip interruption and extended accommodation fees that are comparable to other, more expensive plans.

Heymondo, travel insurance with quarantine coverage

Their high amount of coverage at an affordable price means you won’t have to sacrifice getting good coverage just to pay a reasonable price. They also offer unparalleled customer service, since they are the only company that pays travelers’ medical fees directly instead of reimbursing them after they pay out of pocket and file a claim.

Below is an example of Heymondo Top coverage for a 30-year-old American traveling to Mexico for 14 days whose trip cost $2,500:

  • Price: $70.75
  • COVID coverage: Yes
  • Emergency medical expenses: $250,000
  • Medical evacuation: $500,000
  • Trip cancellation: $3,500
  • Trip interruption: $2,500
  • Extended accommodation fees: $1,800

We always use Heymondo when we travel and the fact that Heymondo pays medical expenses directly is one of our favorite, convenient features. You can even get a discount on their insurance just for being our reader.

2. World Nomads, the cheapest travel insurance for quarantine

If you want to get your travel insurance with quarantine coverage for the lowest price, then World Nomads is the option for you.

World Nomads offers great coverage for emergency medical expenses, medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and trip interruption, although it’s not as high coverage as Heymondo. However, World Nomads does provide the highest coverage for extended accommodation fees.

World Nomads, cheap travel insurance for quarantine

Keep in mind that World Nomads does not pay medical expenses directly like Heymondo does, so you will have to file a claim in order to get reimbursed for quarantine costs.

Below is an example of World Nomads Standard coverage for a 30-year-old American traveling to Mexico for 14 days whose trip cost $2,500:

  • Price: $68.63

3. Travelex, an affordable travel insurance that covers quarantine costs

Travelex offers basic and relatively affordable quarantine travel insurance with their Travel Basic plan. Their plan is not much more expensive than Heymondo or World Nomads, and they do provide a good amount of coverage for trip cancellation and trip interruption.

Travelex, cheap quarantine travel insurance

However, Travelex’s Travel Basic plan offers the lowest amount of emergency medical, medical evacuation, and extended accommodation fees coverage, which is all the more striking considering a similarly priced insurance like Heymondo has much higher coverage.

  • Price: $76.00

4. Trawick, a good travel insurance with quarantine coverage

If money is no object for you, Trawick International’s Safe Travels Voyager plan may be your best bet for travel insurance with quarantine coverage.

This plan offers very high coverage for medical evacuation, extended accommodation fees, and trip interruption. It also provides the same amount of coverage for emergency medical expenses and trip cancellation as Heymondo does, although Heymondo’s policy is quite a bit cheaper.

Another good option for quarantine insurance is World Trips, which offers some of the highest coverage for medical evacuation and trip interruption. Their trip cancellation coverage is pretty standard and equivalent to other companies’ plans.

However, Heymondo’s plan is even more affordable and offers higher coverage for emergency medical expenses and extended accommodation fees. Additionally, as with all of the other insurance companies besides Heymondo, you will have to file a claim with World Trips in order to receive reimbursement for any medical fees you incur as a result of quarantine.

Is Quarantine Travel Insurance Worth It?

Ultimately, yes, quarantine travel insurance is worth it.

Some countries, such as Costa Rica, Venezuela, Argentina, and Thailand, actually require you to have travel insurance for quarantine in order to be able to enter the country. For other countries, even though having quarantine insurance is not an entry requirement, purchasing travel insurance that covers quarantine is highly recommended since it’s always better to err on the side of caution.

As a reminder, no quarantine insurance covers quarantine due to a country’s entry restrictions for travelers. You can check travel restrictions at your destination on our COVID-19 Travel Guide.
