Hi, I’m Kai Longridge! My love for photography started when I was just a kid. My dad was a film photographer, and some of my earliest memories are of playing with his cameras, clicking shutters, winding film, and just being amazed at how they worked. After he passed, I inherited all of his gear, and those cameras became a way for me to feel connected to him.
I started out shooting digital, but eventually found myself circling back to film. It felt like coming home. These days, I photograph the night sky using both digital and film, and I love experimenting with things you don’t often see, like astro double exposures on film. My style leans toward the natural side. I want the photos to feel real, while still holding onto that sense of wonder you get when you’re under a dark sky.
Most of what I’ve learned has been self-taught, through YouTube videos, late-night forum threads, and sharing tips with other photographers online. That mix of curiosity and community has shaped who I am as a photographer.
I’ve also spent the past few years teaching, from one-on-one astrophotography lessons to leading public star parties. My teaching style is very hands-on and conversational. I like asking questions and helping people figure out the why behind what they’re doing. That way, they leave not just with great photos, but also with the confidence to tackle new challenges on their own.
When it comes to guiding groups, I’m the type who’s always prepared and arrives early. My time working at OC Telescope taught me how to stay calm under pressure, troubleshoot problems quickly, and make sure everyone feels included. For me, the best part of any workshop is seeing people light up when they capture something they never thought they could!
Outside of photography, I’m usually outdoors, dirt biking, camping, or stargazing through a telescope. For me, it’s all about staying connected to nature and adventure, and I try to bring that same energy and excitement into every workshop.
The right gear is crucial for shooting starry details in the night sky. Here’s what’s in my toolkit:
