Matthew Wilks

Photographer & Instructor at Capture the Atlas

Hi, I’m Matthew! I’ve been behind a camera for most of my life; my photography journey began decades ago when I was just a kid and unwrapped an SLR camera for my birthday. Not long after, I built a darkroom in my parents’ garage, and that magical moment watching an image slowly appear on paper set the course for everything that came after. I have been creating images ever since.

As digital technology evolved, I transitioned from film to a fully digital workflow. I launched a youth action sports photography business and worked with the CBS Sports website MaxPreps; over time, I shifted my focus to nightscapes, chasing the Milky Way across interesting foregrounds, and eventually expanded into deep-sky photography. Today, I shoot both widefield nightscapes and deep-sky objects, blending decades of experience with a strong technical foundation.

Over the years, I have become deeply experienced with single-shot images, blends, multi-row panoramas, stacked and tracked images, and timelapses using LRTimelapse. I have also spent considerable time photographing wildlife with long telephoto lenses in environments ranging from tropical rainforests to rugged, frozen landscapes.

I bring a calm, supportive teaching style to every workshop. I am patient, thorough, and happy to answer questions at any level. I enjoy helping participants understand concepts at their own pace and love seeing the excitement when someone captures a shot they did not think they could achieve. My goal is to build both competence and confidence, so students leave feeling capable, inspired, and eager to keep exploring the night sky.

Outside of photography, I am a university professor with extensive experience leading groups, mentoring learners, and managing complex situations under pressure. I also volunteer with an international disaster relief organization in roles ranging from medical team leader to liaison officer, deploying to emergencies across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. When I am off duty, you will likely find me racing a MINI Cooper with my family or exploring remote trails in my 4×4 truck in search of solitude. That mix of long-term experience, preparedness, and love for adventure is what I bring to every workshop, making sure participants feel supported and excited to capture the night sky, no matter their skill level.

My happy students

Helping photographers reach their potential is what drives me. Check out what they’ve shared about our time together:

I just attended the Photo Editing Retreat in Tucson. Another WOW experience! We received tons of helpful information about various facets of photo editing along with one-on-one time with the instructors to edit our own images. I really enjoyed deepening my understanding of the editing process and continuing to ingrain a workflow that will help me edit any images on my own. It was nice to also have some time to shoot in the Tucson area and the visit to Kitt Peak was a true treat. Since learning this workflow takes time and dedication, I would HIGHLY recommend this editing retreat as well - I feel so much more confident in my editing now. It truly reinforced the idea that it's great to take awesome photos of the Milky Way, but it's just as important to know how to edit them effectively. Thanks to Matthew and the other instructors for their supportive, professional and helpful instruction!

I recently attended Capture the Atlas's Astrophotography Editing Retreat in Tucson. The combination of classes, open editing time, and visit to Kitt Peak National Observatory were a well-designed learning experience; I was able to learn new editing techniques in class, practice them during open editing time, and capture new images to continue editing practice at home. Thank you to Matthew, Dan, James, and Dorian for all your help!

2025 Astro Editing Retreat
I just attended the Astro Editing Retreat, and I learned a lot! Specially with the one-on-one instruction. This was the most valuable part of the course. In addition, having the recordings to review is extremely helpful! I can only glean so much from a lecture, but having the ability to review the video has been very helpful to me! Additionally, the detailed handouts have been very helpful as I process my older shots. Each of the instructors offered different suggestions. I am a newbie. I very much appreciated Matthew, who was willing to help at the basic level: he made me do the modifications myself, instead of doing it for me. Very appreciative. In addition to the course, I was very grateful to have a private tour of Kitt Peak. An amazing experience!
