How to get the cheapest travel insurance

To show you which is the cheapest travel insurance right now and help you choose which one to buy, I have compared cheap international travel insurance companies. And the results are astounding. You’d be surprised how cheap it is to get travel insurance.

Of course, for this comparison, I have taken into account medical-only travel insurance plans. That is the cheapest travel insurance you can get, but first, you need to understand that budget travel insurance only covers medical expenses and evacuation. If you are looking for more coverage, such as for lost luggage or trip cancellation, I recommend checking our comparison on best travel insurance (where we show you which one offers the most coverage at the best price).

Currently, I have an annual multi-trip insurance policy from Heymondo; it covers several aspects in addition to medical expenses on all trips I take during the year. I’m a frequent traveler so this type of insurance is very convenient and cheaper for me than buying individual cheap travel insurance plans during the year.

If you only travel once in a while and price is the most important thing for you when choosing a policy, at the end of this article, you will find some cheap travel insurance saving tips.

Let’s compare cheap travel insurance plans!

What is the best cheapest travel insurance?

As you can see on the chart above, the cheapest travel insurance is offered by Atlas (Tokio Marine) followed by IMGlobal. The prices of these travel insurance plans are less than $2 per day, which is a huge difference from the other two budget travel insurance providers, Heymondo and World Nomads. However, there is also a huge difference in travel assistance.

On the one hand, Atlas (Tokio Marine) and IMGlobal make you pay every medical expense in advance. Then, you need to file a claim to get reimbursed, which can take months. To solve this, I recommend you buy Atlas or IMGlobal through Insuremytrip, a platform where you can find their policies for the same price but with the addition of the “Anytime Advocate” service that helps you file claims and get reimbursed quickly. Still, they aren’t the best cheap travel insurance if you value travel assistance.

What is the best cheapest travel insurance?

If you want to get an affordable travel insurance plan, with 24/7 assistance, check out Heymondo, and World Nomads.

If you buy a Heymondo basic travel insurance, you won’t have to worry about any out-of-pocket expenses. They will pay your health care providers directly so if you get sick while abroad, finances won’t be an issue. Also, thanks to their assistance app, you can chat with doctors, make free support calls, know in seconds where the closest hospital is, and much more.

Besides, Heymondo is the only travel insurance that covers coronavirus (test + treatment). I have been traveling with their policies for the last couple of years, and their customer support is excellent. You can also get this discounted travel insurance with 5% OFF for being our reader!

World Nomads is also a great option, but they don’t have a medical-only travel insurance plan (that is why it’s the most expensive policy in the comparison). World Nomads’ standard plan also covers things like trip delays, lost luggage, etc. However, if you are interested in that kind of travel coverage, Heymondo has another plan called Heymondo Top that has better coverage than the standard World Nomads plan and at a cheaper price.

What does budget travel insurance cover?

When buying any low-cost travel insurance, you need to check that it includes medical and evacuation coverage. In the example above, we compared policies that cover medical expenses up to $ 100,000, but you can find plans with different limits.

Moreover, many discounted travel insurance providers include a deductible, that is, an amount of money that you take responsibility for before your travel insurance company pays out on a claim. The higher the deductible, the cheaper the travel insurance. However, sometimes cheap ends up being expensive, so you need to assess the risk.

In any case, basic travel insurance, and most travel insurance plans in fact, only cover unforeseen events, like getting sick while you’re abroad or having an accident. You can’t use your cheap travel insurance to get a medical check.

Medical evacuation and repatriation is the other thing you need to make sure that your cheap travel insurance coverage includes. This is the most expensive thing you might need during a trip. If you need evacuation and you don’t have an insurance plan, it can become a big financial loss, so make sure that even the cheapest travel insurance you buy includes this coverage.

To sum it up, most basic cheap travel insurance covers only medical assistance and repatriation.

The difference between cheap travel insurance and other policies

As I have already mentioned, the cheapest basic travel insurance includes only medical and repatriation expenses for a specific trip of a certain duration. Other, more expensive policies include trip delay & cancellation coverage, luggage protection, theft, adventure sports, or electronic coverage.

The difference between cheap travel insurance and other policies

However, if you are thinking about buying a cheap travel insurance plan that includes 24/7 assistance and no out-of-pocket expenses, like Heymondo, I don’t see the point of getting medical-only travel insurance since the price difference for a 25-day trip is less than $3. In that case, I would go with the Heymondo travel insurance Top plan.

When not to buy cheap travel insurance

Tokio Marine and IMGlobal are great options when you want peace of mind at the best price. However, there are some cases where I don’t recommend purchasing the cheapest travel insurance, even if you want to save some money.

These are some examples where you SHOULDN’T buy the cheapest travel insurance:

  • If you find a cheap flight but don’t know if your boss is going to approve your next vacation, you need cancellation coverage with your cheap travel insurance so you don’t lose any money if you can’t travel.
  • If you’re taking a trip where you are going to switch transport often (train, plane, ferry, bus, etc.), it’s better to choose low-cost travel insurance that covers delays and cancellations for transport. For example, I’d recommend you buy the best travel insurance for Indonesia if you’re going to take a trip to Southeast Asia and jump from one means of transport to another.
  • Are you staying with strangers in hostels or shared rooms? Then buy cheap travel insurance that covers electronics like your laptop, camera, or phone.
  • If you plan to do adventure sports during your trip, make sure your cheap travel insurance covers them.
  • If you travel to the United States, don’t buy the cheapest travel insurance. Healthcare in this country is very expensive, so it’s better to buy the best travel insurance for the USA, with no less than $500,000 on medical coverage.

Top tips for cheap travel insurance

Atlas (Tokio Marine) and IMGlobal couldn’t be cheaper. They are the most affordable travel insurance on the market and great options if you don’t mind their drawbacks. Here are some cheap travel insurance saving tips I want to share with you.

Cheap travel insurance reviews

I have been using Heymondo for years because it’s the cheapest travel insurance that covers things such as medical expenses, evacuation, luggage delays & theft, trip cancellation, and other trip-related expenses.

Before, I used to buy even cheaper travel insurance, such as Atlas (Tokio Marine) or IMGlobal, but I prefer not to deal with out-of-pocket expenses. I have used these cheap medical travel insurance companies before and know you can trust them. You will get all your money reimbursed at some point, but sometimes, it’s a pain having to file the claims and wait many months to see the money go back into your bank account.

For my peace of mind, I prefer Heymondo but I totally get if you want to spend the least amount of money possible and don’t care about paying some money upfront as long as you get your payment back later. In this case, Tokio Marine and IMGlobal are great options! Just make sure you book them through Insuremytrip so if you need to file a claim, you can use their great support.

With Heymondo, you don’t even need to file claims for medical expenses, thanks to their great app. For small issues, you can chat with US doctors, or if you need to see a doctor in person, you can call them for free to find out the closest hospital. The Heymondo team will contact the hospital to arrange payments so that you don’t have to advance a single dollar. Can you have cheaper travel insurance at a higher quality? I don’t think so.
