Hi, I’m Tom Rae. My love for photography began at 13 when I first picked up a camera and started capturing the world around me. This passion soon aligned with my lifelong fascination—astronomy. There’s something magical about the night sky that has captivated me since childhood, and photographing it allows me to channel that wonder, one frame at a time.
I specialize in wide, high-resolution panoramic astrophotography, blending dreamy yet realistic portrayals of the night sky with balanced landscapes to tell a harmonious story. With a background in digital art, I bring creativity and imagination to every shot, merging real moments with artistic vision.
My journey has been largely self-taught, shaped by countless nights experimenting in the field and mastering advanced techniques like star tracking. Alongside astrophotography, I also enjoy capturing landscapes—when I’m awake during daylight hours!
Teaching and leading workshops have been some of the most rewarding parts of my career. My experience as an astronomy guide has shaped my approachable teaching style, fostering a relaxed environment where creativity can thrive. I love connecting with people, sharing ideas, and inspiring new ways to see photography.
I’ve been fortunate to photograph incredible places, from New Zealand’s dynamic landscapes to the American Southwest. Aoraki/Mount Cook in New Zealand holds a special place in my heart as both a destination and a classroom.
When I’m not behind the camera, I’m mountaineering, hiking, or skiing—anything that immerses me in adventure. Let’s capture the beauty of the world together and create lasting memories!
As a dedicated night photographer based in New Zealand, having the right gear is crucial for capturing the beauty of the Milky Way, starry skies, and stunning landscapes. Here’s an inside look at the equipment I depend on:
