James McGivern

Photographer & Instructor at Capture the Atlas

Hey! I’m James McGivern, a passionate astrophotographer with a love for both the night sky and the science behind it. My journey into photography began as a child using my mom’s point-and-shoot camera, and that early spark ignited a lifelong love for the art. A stargazing trip to Joshua Tree in 2018 opened my eyes to the beauty of astrophotography, and ever since, I’ve spent almost every clear night capturing the cosmos with my camera and telescope.

This love for the cosmos even pushed me to pursue a degree in astronomy. I’m not just passionate about photographing the sky—I want to dive deeper by conducting research with the images I capture.

What I love most about astrophotography is its complexity. Whether I’m capturing a nightscape with the Milky Way or working on deep sky shots using advanced equipment like star trackers and telescopes, I constantly push the boundaries of what’s possible. For me, the key to a great shot lies not just in the gear but in the careful process of planning, shooting, and post-processing. That is why I dedicate myself to achieving the highest quality images, sometimes spending weeks on a single photograph.

James McGivern Running tours in Monument Valley

Over the years, I’ve developed expertise in widefield nightscapes and deep sky astrophotography, and I enjoy sharing this knowledge with others. One of the most rewarding parts of leading tours at Capture the Atlas is helping participants discover the magic of the night sky. Watching them grow in confidence and skill, and seeing their joy when they capture the perfect shot, is what makes these experiences so special.

When you join one of my tours, you can expect a relaxed, lighthearted environment where learning feels natural and enjoyable. I ensure every participant feels supported, whether they’re grappling with gear, settings, or post-processing. Past participants appreciate the patient, easy-going atmosphere, and I take pride in helping everyone leave with images they can be proud of.

When I’m not leading tours, you’ll find me volunteering at Sky’s the Limit Observatory in Twentynine Palms, CA, or working on creative projects with my 3D printer—currently, I’m immersed in crafting a set of Mandalorian armor (in case you can’t tell, I’m a Star Wars fan)!

My gear

As a dedicated astrophotographer, having the right gear is essential for capturing the wonders of the night sky in detail. From specialized cameras and fast lenses to star trackers and telescopes, here’s a look at the equipment I rely on to push the limits of my deep-sky photography:

My happy students

I’ve had the opportunity to help many photographers achieve their goals. Discover how I have made a difference in their creative journeys and enhanced their skills:

I was part of a trip to Moab, Utah, 2024. It was my first astrophotography tour and my first tour with Capture of the Atlas. I’m hooked. Dorian and James were extraordinary teachers who knew when to let me struggle a bit and when to step in. The group bonded so fast it almost blew my mind. I walked away with some great shot of the Milky Way and a desire to keep getting better and better at it. I’ve already sign up with CTA for a trip this fall in Acadia National Park and Lofoten, Norway in early 2025. It was both fun and challenging! Loved it!

I had an excellent experience with Capture the Atlas on the Monument Valley photography trip. Despite a major sandstorm on the last night, this was the best trip I’ve ever taken. The trip was professionally organized, and the price was worth it for the hands-on learning and the fun I had with the group leaders, Dorian and James. The pre-trip academy courses were detailed and well done, and I appreciated the instructors' expertise and personalized support. The 5-to-1 student-to-instructor ratio ensured I felt comfortable asking questions, no matter my skill level. The Native American guides were exceptional, sharing their cultural knowledge and traditions, which enriched our experience. Overall, the trip was educational, cultural, and incredibly enjoyable, making it a memorable journey. Thank you to everyone involved!

I recently attended the CTA Utah Astrophotography workshop with Dorian Sanders and James McGivern, and it was amazing! Their passion for photography, especially astrophotography, was infectious. They provided personalized attention to a diverse group of participants, helping us with both shooting techniques and editing our astro images. Thanks to their excellent teaching, I left with incredible images from Arches National Park and significantly improved my astrophotography skills. I look forward to joining another workshop with Dorian and James soon!

I attended my first astrophotography workshop with Capture the Atlas in Monument Valley, led by James and Dorian. The pre-workshop courses significantly enhanced my Lightroom and Photoshop skills, preparing me for success in the field. During our first night, we witnessed the Aurora, a truly unforgettable experience. James and Dorian collaborated with local Navajo, enriching our understanding of their culture while helping us capture stunning images. They provided comprehensive guidance throughout the workshop, fostering a supportive community among participants. If you want to improve your photography skills while immersing yourself in the landscape, I highly recommend Capture the Atlas!
