Photo Tour Overview
During this Iceland Drone Photo Tour, we will explore Iceland from a completely different perspective, photographing the extraordinary colors, textures, patterns, and immense scale of its landscapes from the air.
Most of our journey will take place in the remote Icelandic Highlands, a vast wilderness that is only accessible during the summer. Traveling in a specially equipped vehicle, we will navigate rugged mountain roads and river crossings to reach isolated landscapes rarely experienced by most visitors.
We will photograph some of Iceland’s most spectacular aerial subjects, including the braided glacial rivers of southern Iceland, the ice formations of Sólheimajökull, the vast landscapes around Lómagnúpur, the striking green peak of Mælifell, and the volcanic terrain surrounding Rauðaskál. Weather and local authorization permitting, we will also fly at Langisjór and Veiðivötn, two of the most remote and impressive areas of the Highlands.
July brings nearly endless daylight with the midnight sun, giving us the flexibility to fly when the light, wind, and weather conditions are most favorable. Our itinerary will remain adaptable so we can make the most of the conditions while complying with Icelandic drone regulations, protected area restrictions, and any required ranger authorization.
Our instructors are expert drone pilots with extensive experience flying in Iceland. They will help you discover original aerial compositions, plan safe flights, capture high quality photographs and video, and process your aerial images during our editing sessions.
Although aerial photography is the main focus of this adventure, we will also visit remarkable ground photography locations such as Hólmsárfossar, Eldgjá, Sigöldugljúfur, Háifoss, Hjálparfoss, and Þjófafoss. At locations where drone flights are restricted, we will photograph the landscapes using our traditional cameras and tripods.

Is this Iceland Drone photo tour the right experience for me?
This tour is designed for photographers who want to make drone photography the main focus of their Iceland adventure.
You should bring your own drone and be familiar with basic operations. Advanced experience is not required, as our instructors will help you with flight planning, camera settings, composition, video, and editing.
Flights will always depend on the weather, wind, local regulations, and any required ranger authorization. Traditional landscape photography will also be included at locations where drone use is restricted.
If you do not want to fly a drone or plan to use one only occasionally, our Summer Iceland Photo Tour will be a better fit.
2027 Icelandic Highlands Drone Photo Tour Itinerary
The itinerary is indicative and subject to changes based on weather and road conditions. In particular, the section of the trip covering the Highlands may be affected, as the F-roads in the Highlands remain closed during the winter and usually open at some point in June. If the roads are still closed during the tour, an alternative plan within the Highlands will be sought, always with the goal of maximizing photographic opportunities.
The itinerary may change according to weather, wind, road conditions, and range authorization.
We will remain flexible and choose the best locations each day to maximize aerial photography opportunities. We may also adjust our schedule to photograph under the soft light of the midnight sun.
DAY 1: Iceland Drone Photo Tour
The tour will begin at our hotel near Keflavik, where we will meet the group and introduce the adventure ahead.
We will then travel toward southern Iceland, stopping near Selfoss to photograph our first braided rivers. From the air, their winding channels create fascinating patterns, colors, and textures that are impossible to appreciate from ground level.
Later, we will venture into Þórsmörk, a remote valley surrounded by glaciers, rugged mountains, and vast river systems. We will explore this dramatic landscape during the soft evening light, capturing its immense scale and wild character before resting at Hotel Selja.
DAY 2: Glaciers and Braided Rivers
After breakfast, we will continue east along Iceland’s southern coast toward Sólheimajökull. From the air, this impressive glacier reveals intricate ice formations, deep crevasses, dark volcanic sediment, and fascinating textures that cannot be fully appreciated from the ground.
We will then travel toward Lómagnúpur, stopping to photograph the glacial rivers near our hotel. Their channels flow across the black volcanic terrain, creating abstract patterns, contrasting colors, and constantly changing compositions.
After an exciting day of aerial photography, we will rest at Hotel Laki.
DAY 3: Mælifell and the Icelandic Highlands
Today, we will venture deep into the Icelandic Highlands, traveling along remote mountain roads and crossing rivers to reach Mælifell. This striking green volcano rises from an immense black desert, creating one of Iceland’s most dramatic aerial landscapes.
Along the way, we will stop at Hólmsárfossar and explore the volcanic scenery of the Eldgjá Valley. We will finish the day photographing Sigöldugljúfur under the soft light of the midnight sun.
After a late check-in, we will rest at The Highland Center in Hrauneyjar.
DAY 4: Remote Aerial Landscapes
We will spend the morning editing our images, with personalized guidance from our instructors on processing aerial photography.
In the afternoon, we will venture into remote areas of the Icelandic Highlands that our guides have discovered during years of exploration and scouting. Most of these locations do not even have a name, making the experience feel truly wild and exclusive.
Far from the crowds, we will photograph colorful mountains, volcanic formations, winding rivers, and vast untouched landscapes, including the striking Rauðaskál crater.
DAY 5: Langisjór
Today, we will journey deeper into the Highlands toward Langisjór, one of Iceland’s most remote and spectacular lakes. Surrounded by volcanic mountains, dark ridges, and untouched wilderness, this vast landscape offers incredible aerial compositions.
If the weather is favorable, we will spend the afternoon and evening exploring the area under the soft summer light. Drone flights at Langisjór require verbal authorization from the local ranger and will depend on environmental conditions and visitor activity.
We will spend another night at The Highland Center in Hrauneyjar.
DAY 6: Veiðivötn
Weather permitting, we will travel to Veiðivötn, a remote volcanic region filled with lakes, craters, dark lava fields, and colorful waterways. From the air, this otherworldly landscape reveals fascinating patterns and contrasts.
This day will also serve as a flexible backup in case we need to revisit a location affected by unfavorable weather earlier in the tour.
DAY 7: Waterfalls and Return to Keflavik
We will begin the day with another editing session before leaving the Highlands and returning toward Keflavik.
Along the way, we will photograph Háifoss, Hjálparfoss, and Þjófafoss, three impressive waterfalls surrounded by dramatic volcanic landscapes. Where drone flights are restricted, we will use our traditional cameras and tripods to capture these locations from the ground.
We will spend the final night at our hotel near Keflavik.
DAY 8: Farewell
Our Iceland drone tour ends at the hotel where we started our trip. From here, you can book a free shuttle to the airport.

He has explored Iceland extensively over the last decade and has led numerous photo tours across the island. What to bring on this Iceland Drone Photo Tour
We will send you a complete equipment list and information about Iceland’s drone requirements after signing up. Below is a summary of the main items you will need:
Drone photography gear
- A drone with a high-quality camera
- A minimum of three batteries
- Drone controller and all charging cables
- Battery charging hub and international power adapter
- Several high-capacity memory cards
- ND and CPL filters compatible with your drone

Bringing a drone is essential, as aerial photography is the primary focus of this tour. If possible, we also recommend carrying a backup drone.
Traditional photography gear

- A wide-angle lens, such as a 14 to 24 mm
- A medium zoom lens, such as a 24 to 70 mm
- A telephoto lens, such as a 100 to 400 mm
- ND and circular polarizer filters
Traditional camera equipment will be used at locations where drone flights are restricted or when conditions are unsuitable for flying.

Clothing
The average temperature in Iceland in July is 50ºF (10ºC), but the weather is very variable, going from warm and sunny to windy and rainy in a matter of hours. You should be prepared for all seasons and bring warm clothing. Some of the things that we recommend bringing on this Iceland photography tour are:
- A system of layers to wear (base layer, fleece, windproof layer, shell).
- A good pair of breathable boots to keep your feet warm and protect your ankles while walking over rocks and uneven terrain.
- A wool hat and gloves in case it gets cold.

Money
The currency in Iceland is the Icelandic Krona (ISK). We recommend getting ISK in your home country, but if that’s not possible, you can purchase some at Keflavík Airport.
In almost 100% of places in Iceland, you can pay by credit or debit card, no matter how small the amount, so you won’t need much cash for the trip.

Accommodations
The accommodation on this Summer Iceland Photo Tour is double occupancy in shared bedrooms with two individual beds and a private bathroom. We also offer single occupancy rooms in all hotels on the trip for an extra $1,590. If you are interested in having your own room, please let us know on the signup form below since the single occupancy rooms are subject to availability.
During the trip, we are staying in top-rated hotels close to the best locations, where you can see marvelous views of the Icelandic landscapes.
We’ll also have the unique opportunity to stay in the only hotel in all the Icelandic Highlands, the Highland Center Hrauneyjar, during several nights of the tour.
Transportation
All transportation and fuel are included during the tour. We’ll be traveling in a private 4WD bus for the duration of the trip. This bus looks like a rugged bus on the outside, but it’s fully equipped inside with all the amenities of a normal bus, such as reclining seats, USB ports, etc.
This bus will take us not only to the classic locations of Iceland, but also off the beaten path and into the heart of the Highlands. From bumpy roads to river crossings, the bus and our expert drivers will ensure a safe and fun ride across this stunning country.
Hiking
This tour involves minimal walking, as most drone flights will take place close to our vehicles.
Some locations may require short walks over gravel, rocks, or uneven terrain to reach a safe takeoff point or traditional photography compositions. No long or strenuous hikes are planned.
Local Guides and Tours
During this tour, we’ll have the assistance of local bus drivers and guides certified by the Icelandic Tourist Board (“Ferdamálastofa”).
Documentation
Iceland follows the visa regulations of the Schengen Area. Depending on your nationality and duration of stay, a visa may be necessary. We are here to assist you with the visa application process and provide guidance. It’s essential to verify the specific visa requirements for your country of residence prior to your trip.
Visitors from most countries (such as the United States and Canada) don’t need a visa to visit Iceland for less than 90 days. Remember to consult the official embassy or consulate of Iceland for the most up-to-date and accurate visa information based on your nationality and circumstances.
Update on ETIAS:
A new travel authorization system called ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026. Once implemented, travelers from many countries — including those who currently do not require a visa, such as the United States and Canada — will need to apply for ETIAS before entering the EU.

Drone documentation
Our tour Welcome Brochure will include detailed information and recommendations regarding drone registration, pilot certification, permits, insurance, and Icelandic flight regulations.
Participants are responsible for completing the required documentation before the tour and carrying proof of registration, certification, and insurance when applicable.
Our instructors will also provide guidance in the field. All flights will depend on weather conditions, local restrictions, and any required authorization from rangers or other authorities.

Flights
You should book your flight to Keflavik International Airport.
The price of round-trip flights to Iceland from Europe and the US is approximately $400-$700 USD. We recommend this article to find the best flights to Keflavik from your current location.
Meals
Meals are not included except for breakfast at the hotels. We will have breakfast at our accommodation and have a big meal at dinner in one of the local restaurants (We also know where to find the tastiest local Icelandic food). 😉
During the day, we will eat snacks/picnic to speed up and maximize the time for photography.
Neither supermarkets nor restaurants are cheap in Iceland, so we recommend preparing to spend about $60-$80 USD on food per day.

This tour is completely centered on drone photography. Our schedule will revolve around the best light, wind, and weather conditions to maximize every aerial photography opportunity.
The group is limited to 12 participants and two instructors, with no more than six photographers per instructor. This allows us to provide personalized guidance during every flight and editing session.
We'll venture deep into the Icelandic Highlands to photograph remote landscapes, including unnamed locations our guides have discovered during years of scouting. Many of these places are rarely visited or photographed.
Before the tour, we will discuss your goals, experience, and drone equipment so we can provide instruction adapted to your needs. You will receive guidance before, during, and after the trip.
Our instructors are expert drone pilots and aerial photographers with extensive experience flying in Iceland. They understand its changing weather, remote terrain, regulations, and unique photographic opportunities.
Beyond the photography, this is a true adventure into one of Iceland’s wildest regions. You will return home with unique aerial images, new skills, and memories shared with a small group of passionate photographers.
Frequently asked questions about our Iceland drone photo tour
What level of drone photography experience should I have?
You do not need to be an advanced drone photographer, but you should feel comfortable with basic operations such as takeoff, landing, changing batteries, navigating the flight interface, and controlling your drone safely.
Our instructors will help you improve your flight planning, camera settings, aerial composition, advanced capture techniques, and editing workflow.
Do I need to bring my own drone?
Yes. Drone photography is the main focus of this tour, so every photographer should bring their own drone. If possible, we also recommend bringing a backup drone because we will be traveling through remote areas where repairs and replacements may be difficult.
Can I join if I only want to fly occasionally?
Traditional landscape photography will be included at locations where drones are restricted. However, most photography sessions will focus on aerial images.
If you do not want to fly a drone or plan to use one only occasionally, our Summer Iceland Photo Tour will be a better fit.
What drone documentation will I need?
Our Welcome Brochure will include information and recommendations regarding registration, pilot certification, permits, insurance, and Icelandic drone regulations.
Participants are responsible for completing the required documentation before the tour and carrying the necessary proof when applicable.
Are drone flights guaranteed?
No individual flight can be guaranteed. Flying will depend on the wind, weather, visibility, local restrictions, environmental conditions, and any required ranger authorization.
Our itinerary will remain flexible so we can maximize aerial photography opportunities while always prioritizing safety and compliance with local regulations.
Can I join with a small drone such as a DJI Mini?
Yes. A compact drone such as a DJI Mini can be used on this tour. However, smaller drones are generally more affected by Iceland’s strong and unpredictable winds and may offer lower image quality than larger models.
Our instructors will help you assess the conditions and fly safely, but we recommend bringing the most capable drone you feel comfortable operating. If possible, bringing a backup drone is also advisable.
What physical shape do I need to be in?
This tour involves minimal walking, as most drone flights will take place near our vehicles. Some locations may require short walks over gravel, rocks, or uneven terrain to reach a suitable takeoff point.
Participants should also be comfortable with long drives, rugged Highland roads, river crossings, and changing schedules.
Can my non-photographer companion join the tour?
Nonphotographer companions are welcome, but they must reserve a full spot under the same price and conditions as any other participant. We do not allow nonparticipant companions to travel with the group.
They should understand that this experience is centered on drone photography and may involve long sessions, remote locations, and schedules determined by the weather and light.

This was a 10 day photography focused tour through southern Iceland and the Icelandic Highlands with 10 participants and two excellent guides, David and Unai.

2025 Summer Iceland Photo Tour
We had a great group of photographers led by two very capable professionals who took us to exceptional sights. They were helpful and encouraging at every point. We had brief presentations on editing at the end of our time. I would have found it helpful to have some pointers given before we got started on techniques like focus stacking and bracketing. That would give me better insight into what I might look for in a composition or how I might use those techniques to enhance my skills. All in all, it was a superb experience with a group of dedicated people in an impressive landscape.

2021 Iceland Photo Tour
Traveled with Dan on the South Iceland tour, September 2021. We had six "photographers" on the tour of varying experience and Dan was exceptional at working with us on our level. He was also accommodating by changing the timing of the itinerary due to the weather and the eruption of the volcano. The tour included, as advertised, some hiking to remote places to capture some unique photos. The weathered dictated times to get out to see the Aurora and sunrises which were all impressive.

I joined Capture the Atlas in Iceland in September 2021 for the consecutive North and South tours. It was a trip of a lifetime with jam-packed days and unbelievable (and unworldly) sights.
