Our team

Our story

Today, Capture the Atlas is an exhilarating endeavor that guides over 300 passionate photographers each year in their quest to capture stunning images around the globe. But let’s rewind to the beginning!

When we first dreamed up Capture the Atlas, we had no idea that our passion project would blossom into this—or, even less so, that we could make a living from it for ourselves and the other photographers who are now part of the Capture the Atlas crew. It started as a heartwarming adventure—a way to blend our love for travel and photography while sharing our excitement for exploration with others.

In 2016, Ascen began writing her personal Spanish-language travel blog, Atlas de una Amazona, where she documented her first trips across Asia and Europe. Meanwhile, Dan’s photography began attracting attention, showcasing his talent for capturing stunning landscapes and enchanting night skies. In 2017, when Ascen landed a job in the United States, we decided to move there and rebrand, seeking a name that reflected our new adventures and made our content more accessible to a global audience.

This led us to Capture the Atlas. Ascen’s enthusiasm for trip planning, combined with Dan’s knack for photography, made for a perfect collaboration. Dan began sharing photography guides alongside Ascen’s travel posts, enhancing them with his breathtaking images. Soon enough, our readers started asking if they could join us on our adventures.

As interest grew, we recognized a demand for group trips and photography lessons. In response, we launched our first photo tour to Iceland in 2019, marking the beginning of a thrilling new chapter for us. The journey didn’t stop there; we quickly expanded our offerings to include photography trips to many national parks in the U.S. and other international destinations like Norway, Australia, Chile, Argentina, and beyond.

Though the pandemic temporarily disrupted our plans in 2020, our travel itch never faded. By 2021, demand surged, prompting Dan to leave his corporate job and fully commit to this adventure. By the end of 2022, Ascen followed suit, and together, we now travel full-time, documenting our journeys, creating detailed travel guides, and designing photography tours that help fellow photographers capture breathtaking images.

Looking back, we can hardly believe how far we’ve come since those early days of Atlas de una Amazona. Every trip we lead, and every story we share reminds us of the power of following our passions and the incredible community we’ve built around our love for travel and photography. Thanks for being part of our journey!

Our happy students!

We’ve had the opportunity to work with and help countless photographers over the years. Here’s what some of them have to say about their experiences with us.

Everything about this trip exceeded my expectations. The guides, Prince and Unai, were awesome. It was clear from the very first moments that they were only interested in the guests capturing the very best images possible. In particular I liked the way they prepared us for the coming shoot. We’d get a note every evening about the plan for the next morning, including what gear we would need to get the most out of the shoot. The same writeup was provided before our afternoon and evening shoots, which I found very helpful.

I recently participated in the Swiss and French Alps tour and was blown away. Dan and David were incredibly attentive to each participant and both were overflowing with their knowledge of photography as well as the locations we visited. They safely got us to each location and all the accommodations, transportation etc. were very comfortable. The places we visited were exactly what was advertised in the marketing materials which was spectacular because the images were what drew me into signing up for the workshop! Best of all were the other participants which made the workshop 10 stars, but unfortunately, I am only limited to giving 5 stars!

What an experience! I took the Death Valley & Alabama Hills Workshop with Dan and Capture the Atlas and WOW! Between the breath-taking landscapes and incredible Milky Way views offered by the area and the sincere and approachable teachings and guidance of Dan and his team, I was blown away. I think my favorite part was that I left feeling excited and inspired to get out and shoot more. I HIGHLY recommend Dan and Capture the Atlas if you're looking to get into landscape or astrophotography or if you're already into it and want to learn/explore more!

The Capture the Atlas team did an exemplary of facilitating the photo shoots and helping with post-processing during our trip to the Australian Outback. The spots they picked to shoot were spectacular with lots of interesting foregrounds. They provided hands-on instruction, as needed, to ensure that we were getting the pictures we wanted to produce. We shot some fantastic Milky Way panoramas and also some very interesting single shots. I highly recommend Capture the Atlas and I plan to do several more trips.

The trip of a lifetime was made even more incredible by Capture The Atlas and our guides: Prince and David! They took away the stress of having to organize and plan a trip of this scale on my own. The cabins were fabulous and the photo locations were unlike anywhere I’ve been before. The 1-on-1 photography instruction helped me get the best shots at each location. I also really appreciate the community that this team creates for each tour - the friendships formed were unexpected and very much appreciated. I can’t wait to start planning my next adventure with Capture The Atlas.

2023 Lofoten Photo Tour
This was my second tour with Capture The Atlas, this time in the Lofoten Islands in Norway, and it was an amazing experience from beginning to end. This was an immersive experience across the board, spending time shooting at carefully chosen locations, and interacting with our phenomenal guides. Editing sessions, and group learning with Dan, Prince and David were exemplary, and it continued my faith in the value Capture the Atlas brings to my enjoyment and passion of this great hobby. Carefully scouted locations and an intimate understanding of the area absolutely solidified my commitment to Capture the Atlas as my photographic tour vendor of choice. Absolutely the best in my opinion.

I joined Capture the Atlas in Iceland in September 2021 for the consecutive North and South tours. It was a trip of a lifetime with jam-packed days and unbelievable (and unworldly) sights. They cater to clients of all skill levels and they were very patient with us. Especially since I didn't even know how to turn my camera on to manual settings the first day. However with their expertise (and once again constant patience) I really upped my skill level. I loved how they REALLY knew the area. They visited and researched the areas for the tours to find us accommodations and hidden gems that we would never have seen or found if we had selected another company or tried to visit on our own.

2021 South & North Iceland Tours
Our trip to Iceland lead by David Aguilar and Francesco Dall'Olmo was amazing. They took time to stay in touch with our group weeks before the trip and answered every question leading to our tour. They are both very knowledgeable about photography and took time to give you the best composition tips as well as locations for the best shot.
