Compared to the quieter Playa Hermosa, Playa del Coco allows you to experience the lively nightlife of Liberia, with lots of beachside bars where you can dance, sip on cocktails, and enjoy the atmosphere. Most of the action is along the beach, but you’ll also find some good spots around the main avenue in town.

For those with an adventurous spirit, La Leona Waterfall is an absolute must-see. Not only is the waterfall surrounded by magnificent turquoise waters, but it’s also tucked away inside a cave, making it even more special to visit.

However, this waterfall is located on private land, so you’ll need to book this tour with an authorized guide to visit. The route is about 2.5 miles long and begins at the Blanco River. Be prepared to get wet as you’ll be trekking along the riverbed, navigating canyons, exploring caves, and climbing stairs.
There’s also a bit of rappelling involved, but don’t worry—while it’s an active hike, it’s not technically difficult. Just make sure you’re in good shape because the hike takes about three hours, and you’ll be moving nonstop to enjoy this incredible waterfall in Liberia.

Walking through this park, you’ll feel the powerful presence of nature, with trees over 500 years old towering around you. Plus, if you’re lucky, you might spot some of the most elusive animals in Costa Rica, like jaguars or pumas.

The beaches within the park are especially famous as nesting sites for various Costa Rican turtle species, including hawksbill, leatherback, and green turtles. The most popular beach here is Playa Naranjo, known worldwide for its “Witch’s Rock” surf break. Another gem is Playa Nancite, one of the few nesting spots for Ridley turtles. Only 30 people are allowed to visit Playa Nancite each day, so you’ll need to reserve a permit through the National Park Service if you want to experience this rare sight.

Here, you can learn about the Battle of Hacienda Santa Rosa through exhibits filled with military memorabilia, information panels, and old photographs. We opted for this guided tour to explore both Liberia and the park, which added a lot of context to what we were seeing.

Palo Verde National Park, also within driving distance of Liberia in Guanacaste, is a fantastic destination if you’re keen on seeing the country’s diverse wildlife. This park is home to an impressive 15 different ecosystems, including wetlands that support over 750 plant species and a significant number of Costa Rica’s bird species. If you’re a bird lover, this place is paradise.
13. Palo Verde National Park, another must-visit attraction near Liberia
You can explore Palo Verde on foot by following one of its trails. The La Roca Trail is the most famous, and though it’s only 2,000 feet long, it leads to a scenic viewpoint overlooking Laguna de Palo Verde and the Nicoya Peninsula. For those who enjoy longer hikes, the El Guacayán and La Cantera Trails are great options to explore more of the park.
For an unforgettable experience, though, I recommend taking this boat ride along the Tempisque River. Not only will you get stunning views, but you’ll also have the chance to spot wildlife along the riverbanks, like crocodiles and other reptiles. This boat ride is by far the best way to see the park’s rich animal life up close, so I highly recommend it.
