How to get to Drake Bay, Costa Rica
The first thing to note is that reaching Drake Bay isn’t a walk in the park. Personally, I find this aspect particularly appealing because it ensures that only those who genuinely appreciate its natural beauty make the journey to this remote destination.
The primary hub, Agujitas de Drake, is essentially a small coastal village surrounded by lush jungle. You have several options for getting to Drake Bay, including:
Taking a boat to Bahia Drake
Opting for a boat ride is the most convenient way to get to Drake Bay, Costa Rica. To do this, you’ll need to drive to the small town of Sierpe and park your car in a designated area (usually around $6 per day). From there, you’ll hop on a boat that will take you across the Sierpe River to Agujitas de Drake.
Boats depart from the Don Jorge Restaurant, so I recommend arriving well in advance to avoid any unforeseen delays and secure your accommodation in Drake Bay. The journey typically lasts around an hour.
Taking a boat to Bahia Drake
Keep in mind that the boat fare may vary depending on the captain, and payment is usually accepted in cash, either in local currency or in dollars. However, I advise against using dollars as it often ends up being more expensive (usually around $20 per person).
Here are the scheduled departures:
- From Sierpe to Agujitas de Drake: Daily at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
- From Agujitas de Drake to Sierpe: Daily at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Driving to Drake Bay by car
Driving to Drake Bay is not an option I’d readily recommend. The journey can be quite lengthy, and to be honest, the road conditions leave much to be desired. It’s quite a trek, and you’ll need to closely monitor the weather forecast for Drake Bay, as rainfall often leads to rising rivers, which can block the roads.
While some bridges have been constructed recently, I still wouldn’t suggest this option. It’s only somewhat favorable if you have a 4WD vehicle and you’re traveling during the dry season, from December to April.
If you still opt to reach Bahía Drake by road, you’ll need to drive towards La Palma and take the detour just after Rincón de Osa. From there, assuming the road is dry, it’ll take you roughly two hours to reach your destination.
Getting to Drake Bay by bus and boat
If you’re not planning to rent a car in Costa Rica, you can travel from San José to Palmar Norte by bus with the Tracopa company, changing buses in Ciudad Cortés. From Palmar Norte, take a shared taxi to Sierpe. Once in Sierpe, you’ll need to hop on a taxi boat to Agujitas de Drake.
As you can imagine, this is quite a lengthy and complicated journey. So, unless you’re on a tight budget, I wouldn’t recommend it. Coordinating the bus schedule with the boat departure time can be tricky, and the journey itself is very time-consuming. However, it’s the only economical option for those who prefer not to drive.
Taking a flight to Drake Bay
For a quicker and more convenient option, consider taking a flight from San José to Drake Bay. Within about an hour, you’ll touch down at the Drake Bay Airport, which essentially consists of a small landing strip. This service is provided by the airline Sansa on a regular basis, with multiple flights per month. However, it’s worth noting that the prices are considerably higher compared to other transportation options. Upon arrival, you’ll need to take a taxi to your hotel, typically costing around $10 per person.

Day trips to Corcovado
While I highly recommend allocating more days for your visit, if you’re limited to just one day, consider this excursion, which includes round-trip boat transportation from Sierpe to Drake Bay and a comprehensive guided tour of Drake Bay and Corcovado National Park. It’s the best way to make the most of your limited time.
Best things to do in Drake Bay, Costa Rica
Now that you’ve sorted out how to get to Drake Bay, it’s time to plan which activities you want to do. This will largely depend on how much time you have and the excursions you’re interested in.
To give you an idea, getting to Drake Bay could take about 2 full days. So, if you only have 3 days in total, it might not be worth the journey for just one day of enjoyment. On the other hand, exploring Corcovado National Park and the Drake Trail requires an additional 2 days, and you should add an extra day if you want to visit Caño Island, which I highly recommend. In short, plan for at least 4 nights and 5 days to truly experience all that Bahia Drake has to offer.
If you think I’m overestimating, wait until you see all the incredible things to do in Drake Bay. I’m confident you’ll find it hard to fit everything you want to do into your schedule!
Explore Corcovado National Park
Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica spans 980,000 acres of jungle and is home to 2.5% of the world’s animal and plant species. This protected reserve remains largely untouched, which makes thorough exploration challenging, especially during the rainy season.
As I mentioned earlier, if you’re short on time, I recommend joining this day trip from Sierpe. However, if your schedule allows for flexibility, I suggest staying a bit longer to explore at your own pace. After all, given its remote location, you never know when you’ll have the chance to visit again, right?
Explore Corcovado National Park
It’s crucial to note that to preserve the park, visitors must be accompanied by an authorized guide; visiting the park on your own is not permitted. While there are several designated areas within the park, the most popular ones are the Sirena Sector and the San Pedrillo Sector. I suggest dedicating two days to exploring: one for this excursion to Sirena and another for this excursion to San Pedrillo. Alternatively, if time is limited, consider this tour of the intermediate area between Sirena and San Pedrillo.

Caño Island is a small yet captivating island, located just 12.5 miles from Bahia Drake, surrounded by a protected marine area spanning 14,300 acres. Here, you’ll find numerous fascinating species including humpback whales, various dolphin species, and a plethora of marine life.

Caño Island is renowned as one of the best destinations for diving in Costa Rica. If you’re certified and eager to explore its vibrant seabed, I recommend booking this tour. During the excursion, you’ll embark on two scuba dives at different points within the reserve. I got my PADI certification a year before visiting Costa Rica, so I was able to dive without any issues.
Alternatively, if you’re not yet certified, why not seize the opportunity to become certified in one of the world’s marine paradises? With this diving course, you’ll gain certification, allowing you to dive up to 60 feet anywhere on the planet. And if you’re not quite ready to take the plunge, you can still enjoy the underwater marvels with this snorkeling excursion – it’s a fantastic way to experience the beauty of Caño Island from a slightly shallower depth.
Hike the Drake Trail
The Drake Trail hike is a coastal adventure that kicks off in Agujitas de Drake and ends at San Josecito Beach. If you’re up for a mesmerizing journey through natural wonders, picture-perfect beaches, and untouched landscapes, I highly recommend dedicating a full day to this scenic Drake Bay hike.
The trail spans 5 miles in total, so plan about 4 hours to complete it. However, feel free to allocate extra time for leisurely stops at the various beaches dotting Drake Bay – after all, it’s hard to resist taking a dip and capturing photos in this paradise.
Hike the Drake Trail
While the route is relatively straightforward, it can pose challenges in bad weather or if you’re ill-prepared. There are no amenities along the way, so pack essentials like enough water, snacks, and sunscreen. Plus, since cell service might be spotty, it’s wise to download the map beforehand, just in case.
The best way to hike the Drake Trail is to take a taxi to San Josecito, starting at the endpoint, and then hike back. This way, you’ll finish up in Agujitas de Drake, allowing you to head straight to your accommodation for a well-deserved rest. Of course, if you prefer, you can opt to return via the same path or arrange for a taxi from San Josecito.

Spotting dolphins is common during boat excursions from the Drake Bay area, but if you want to increase your chances, I highly recommend booking this boat tour.

Beyond the organized excursions, one of my top recommendations for Bahía Drake is to take some time to explore the charming town of Agujitas. Many travelers simply use it as a base and overlook its unique charm and the chance to immerse themselves in local life.

Agujitas may lack paved roads and shopping centers, but it compensates with secluded beaches, fresh fruit stands, and abundant wild nature. Don’t miss the chance to venture on a small trek to visit the suspension bridge, the most iconic structure in town. While Playa Colorada, the main beach in Drake Bay, might not be the most stunning, it’s a cozy spot to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Just remember to check with the locals before swimming, as mischievous crocodiles sometimes venture into the sea through the mouth of the Agujitas River.
On the main street, you’ll find most of the hotels in Bahía Drake, along with restaurants, supermarkets, and travel agencies. However, the town consists of only 4 or 5 sandy streets in total, so it’s not difficult to explore everything it has to offer within a short amount of time.

Once you arrive, a short 1,500-foot path leads you to the beach. You can also take a boat ride, but you must check with the locals for availability and schedules. Keep an eye out for scarlet macaws and monkeys along the way, but be cautious, as they may try to snatch your belongings.
- Las Caletas Beach: Located 2.5 miles from Agujitas de Drake, Las Caletas Beach is a perfect spot for a refreshing swim. If you’re hiking the Drake Trail, you’ll stumble upon it along the way.

- Keep in mind that there are no ATMs in Drake Bay, so I recommend estimating your travel costs and bringing enough cash for your stay. If you prefer to use debit or credit cards, expect a surcharge ranging from 5% to 13%.
- Remember, you can only explore Corcovado National Park with an authorized local guide, even if you arrange permits independently. Also, you must adhere to the rules and regulations of Bahía Drake to avoid penalties or expulsion from the protected area. Activities such as smoking, using single-use plastic bottles, feeding animals, or straying off trails are strictly prohibited.
- If you’re driving by car, remember that there’s no gas station in the town of Drake Bay. So, make sure your tank is full before you hit the road.
