Though it may not be one of those idyllic white-sand beaches often featured in travel brochures, its cozy atmosphere and breathtaking sunsets make it one of the best tourist destinations in Costa Rica. It’s an ideal spot to unwind and disconnect from your daily routine. Additionally, the town of Playa Hermosa serves as a great base for exploring the most popular attractions in Guanacaste, my favorite province in Costa Rica and the best place in the country for enjoying a vacation by the sea.
This 1.2-mile-long beach is surrounded by an amazing tropical forest, so don’t be surprised if you spot some of the most famous wildlife in Costa Rica, including monkeys, iguanas, and birds. Have your camera ready! If you’re planning to spend your vacation in Playa Hermosa, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your stay.
How to get to Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica
First, it’s important to know that there are several beaches in Costa Rica with the same name. You can find other “Playa Hermosa” in Cobano, near Playa Jaco, and next to Playa Uvita. However, in this article, I’m going to focus on Playa Hermosa in the province of Guanacaste.
This earthly paradise is located in Bahía Hermosa in Sardinal, in the northern part of the province. Some of the best beaches in Guanacaste are here, as I’ll tell you about later.
If you’re arriving by plane, the closest airport is in Liberia, just 40 minutes away. You can also get here by bus or car from San José, which takes about 4 hours.
Best things to do in Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste
The best things to do in Playa Hermosa are relaxing, taking a dip in the sea, and basking in the sun. However, there are plenty of activities for the more adventurous travelers. If you’re thinking about joining one of the tours in Guanacaste, here are some exciting and super fun options to help you discover all its charm:
1. Sunset sailing and snorkeling tour
One of the first things we did upon arriving in Playa Hermosa was taking this sailing and snorkeling tour. What could be better than cruising on a catamaran and witnessing the sunset from the water? We had tried snorkeling in Costa Rica before, but this experience was truly special.
During this tour of Playa Hermosa, you get to visit various bays and secluded beaches, with stops to explore the incredible underwater world along the coast. We encountered two different species of Costa Rican sea turtles, and numerous fish, and were even lucky enough to have dolphins accompany us on our return journey – it was an amazing experience. We also heard that whales are sometimes spotted in the area, although we didn’t see any, which gave us a perfect reason to come back.
You can also enjoy an open bar with drinks and a light lunch. All you need to bring is your towel and a desire to have a great time!
2. Diving in Playa Hermosa, Playas del Coco and Playa Ocotal
If you’re a certified diver and eager to explore the depths of the ocean, don’t miss the chance to dive in Playa Hermosa. Here, you have several dive spots to choose from based on your experience level, including some of the best diving spots in Costa Rica. For example, Playa Hermosa excursions to the famous Catalina Islands are popular for diving with manta rays, while the Bad Islands are ideal for diving with bull sharks.
The Gulf of Papagayo, where Playa Hermosa is located, is home to many incredible marine species, so we didn’t hesitate to dive in. Plus, there are both morning and afternoon shifts available, so there’s no excuse not to enjoy scuba diving in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. If you’re looking for more adventurous experiences, night dives are also offered here, providing a glimpse into a different side of the ocean, perfect for the most daring divers.
3. Watch the sunset at the Playa Hermosa Viewpoint
Beyond the excursions in Costa Rica, there’s one activity that’s always on my itinerary: watching the sunset from a panoramic viewpoint. In Playa Hermosa, you can visit this free viewpoint that offers stunning views of the area from above – it’s the perfect way to end your day.
Just remember, it takes about an hour to hike to the top, so check the sunset time to ensure you arrive on time.
4. Visit Diamante Eco Adventure Park
If you’re looking for exciting activities near Playa Hermosa to enjoy with family or friends, I highly recommend opting for this excursion to Diamante Eco Adventure Park.
Your tour ticket grants you a full day of adventure. Start with a leisurely stroll through the Botanical Garden, where you can explore diverse species of fruit trees, vibrant flowers, and other tropical plants. It’s a refreshing way to immerse yourself in nature and breathe in the fresh air.
Next, head to the Traditional House to delve into local culture. Here, you can step into a replica of a traditional living room dating back about a century. You can also engage in educational activities to learn about characteristic crops of Costa Rica, such as coffee, cocoa, and sugar cane. The park also houses one of the most beautiful animal sanctuaries in Costa Rica, where you can discover native fauna and how to contribute to its conservation efforts. Keep an eye out for rescued sloths, toucans, jaguars, and other adorable animals.
To cap off your day, get ready for some adrenaline on the suspension bridges that cross over thick vegetation and a pond with crocodiles. Zip-lining in Costa Rica is quite popular, so I encourage you to try one of the routes and soar nearly 33 feet high.
5. Visit Liberia, the capital of Guanacaste
Just 21 miles from Playa Hermosa is Liberia, one of the most beautiful cities in Costa Rica that is definitely worth a visit. Liberia is the oldest city in the province, founded back in the 1700s, so walking its streets gives you a chance to discover ancient monuments and traditional architecture.
It’s always fascinating to delve into the daily life of local people. We enjoyed a picnic in one of the parks, recharging our batteries while watching children play on a sunny day.
You can also visit the Guanacaste Museum, one of the most important attractions in Liberia. This old barracks has been transformed into an exhibition space showcasing works by national artists and pieces carved from fish bones, offering insight into Costa Rican art. Plus, it’s one of the free things to do in Playa Hermosa, so it’s an ideal activity even if you’re traveling on a budget. The museum is located just a few steps from the Main Plaza.
Another notable landmark is the Hermitage of La Agonía, an ancient church blending elements of Greek and Gothic styles. Beyond its architectural value, it has immense historical significance as one of the first places to ring its bells at the country’s declaration of independence. The façade is incredibly beautiful, and inside you’ll find paintings of Spanish origin.
If you decide to rent a car in Costa Rica, it’ll take you just 45 minutes to drive from Playa Hermosa to Liberia. Alternatively, you can take a bus, which runs several times a day and takes about an hour.
6. Excursion to Tenorio Volcano with sloth-spotting
Playa Hermosa is a popular base camp for exploring other important areas of Costa Rica. One fantastic option is this excursion to visit the Tenorio Volcano, one of the most iconic volcanoes in Costa Rica. Here, you’ll encounter stunning vistas, exotic wildlife, and one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Costa Rica, the Río Celeste Waterfall.
The environment is spectacular and untouched, so if you want to enjoy hiking near Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica, you’re in the right place. I highly recommend taking a stroll through the jungle where you can spot the famous sloths of Costa Rica high in the trees. Keep an eye out for exotic birds, frogs, and other insects as well.
To end your adventure, enjoy a delicious lunch while taking in the views of one of the most popular national parks in Costa Rica. Not a bad way to spend your day, right?
Best beaches near Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste, Costa Rica
There are numerous beaches in Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste, that are well worth a visit. If you love discovering paradisiacal beaches as much as I do, here are some suggestions for other natural gems where you can swim and enjoy life by the sea:
Playa Calzón de Pobre
Playa Calzón de Pobre is a small beach located between Playa del Coco and Playa Hermosa in Guanacaste. It’s a closed bay with incredibly calm and crystal-clear waters, perfect for snorkeling or leisurely swims.
However, you should keep in mind that there are no hotels or restaurants nearby, so make sure to bring everything you need for your visit. Before reaching the beach, I highly recommend stopping at the Punta Cacique Natural Viewpoint. Trust me, it offers one of the most breathtaking views on the island.
To reach this beach, you need to turn left off the main road and drive several feet along a stone path. If you have a 4WD vehicle, it’s going to be a smooth journey, but if you have a regular car, drive with caution.
Playa Coco
Unlike Playa Calzón de Pobre, Playa del Coco is one of the most accessible beaches in the area. However, its accessibility means it can get quite crowded, especially on weekends when both national and international tourists flock to this beach town. Nevertheless, it’s a great spot near Playa Hermosa to unwind, enjoy traditional Costa Rican dishes, and take a refreshing dip in the sea.
If you’re looking for a friendly atmosphere and want to mingle with the locals, this place is your best bet. Plus, there are several hotels in the area if you want to stay for a few days, and there are various entertainment activities such as water sports as well as great spots to enjoy the nightlife in Playa Hermosa.
Playa Penca
Playa Penca is one of the best-kept treasures near Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste. If you have a free afternoon or feel like exploring a little more, I highly recommend checking out this little paradise.
Located in Bahía Potrero, this beach boasts white sand, turquoise waters with gentle waves, and lush vegetation that will leave you speechless. You’ll rarely find many people here, ensuring a quiet and peaceful environment where you can enjoy the silence.
Access to Playa Penca can be a bit challenging as the road is not paved, but it’s well worth the effort to experience this pristine natural area.
Playa Ocotal
Playa Ocotal is about a 20-minute drive from Playa Hermosa. Although it’s right next to Playa del Coco, it has a much calmer and more welcoming atmosphere. It features golden sand and is protected by beautiful cliffs, which provide shelter from coastal currents. Many visitors come here for swimming and snorkeling, thanks to its rich marine life.
One intriguing feature of Playa Ocotal is the morning mist that often blankets the ocean, creating a magical and unique atmosphere.
Playa Danta
Lastly, Playa Danta is another beach by Playa Hermosa that you can explore. It’s a 40-minute drive away, but you’ll be rewarded with turquoise waters and a unique natural setting where you can connect with the ocean and enjoy a day by the sea.
Alternatively, you can take a short path from Playa Danta to reach Playa Dantita in just 15 minutes. This spot also offers clear, calm waters. Remember to bring provisions for the day, particularly sunscreen and plenty of water, as there are no services nearby.
