For me, Monteverde National Park was one of the national parks in Costa Rica that I simply couldn’t afford to miss. If you didn’t know, it is home to 50% of Costa Rica’s biodiversity, which also accounts for 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity. So, when I started planning my trip to Costa Rica, I didn’t hesitate to include Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. And sure enough, it exceeded all my expectations and has become one of the Costa Rican gems I’ll treasure forever.

Best things to do in Monteverde, Costa Rica
If you’re not sure what to do in Monteverde, Costa Rica to make the most out of your trip, here’s a selection of activities I think are essential to truly experience all its charm.
1. Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve
Walking the trails of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is a unique experience and, without a doubt, was one of the most memorable moments of my trip. I still remember the sensation of walking among the lush vegetation, where barely any sunlight penetrated through the leaves, and the sky was nearly invisible through the dense canopy. Additionally, the ever-present fog gave the landscape a mystical atmosphere, perfectly living up to its reputation as a “cloud forest.”
But let’s start from the beginning. The Tropical Science Center and the local Quakers joined forces to protect the Monteverde Cloud Forest and ensure the conservation of its incredible biodiversity. To give you an idea, around 3,000 species of plants, over 400 species of birds, 600 different types of butterflies, 120 mammals, 60 amphibians, and many reptiles coexist here, which makes it one of the most unique places on the planet.
1. Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve
Of course, just because it houses so many species, it doesn’t mean that you will be able to easily observe them all. Although you can visit Monteverde National Park on your own, I recommend joining this guided tour. This way, you’ll be accompanied by a knowledgeable guide with a sharp eye for spotting Costa Rican animals in the thick vegetation who will share insights about their behaviors. Plus, you’ll learn all about the history of the place, which is really fascinating and makes it one of the best excursions in Monteverde.
Without a doubt, exploring its 12 trails is one of the best things to do in Monteverde. So, don’t miss the opportunity to walk its 8 miles of trails (or at least some of them). Along the way, you can stop at different viewpoints and take in the panoramic views of this extraordinary natural reserve. So, have your camera ready.
Cloud Forest Trail
1.3 miles. This is the most popular hike in Monteverde Cloud Forest, where you can see orchids, colorful flowers, and a variety of plants.
El Camino Trail
1.3 miles. I recommend this trail if you’re interested in birdwatching. It’s the widest path in the park and has the most light.
Pantanoso Trail (Swamp Trail)
1 mile. This is the most touristy route, so the noise tends to scare away animals, making sightings more difficult, but the vegetation is stunning. You can combine this trail with the Cloud Forest and El Camino trails since they are interconnected.
El Rio Trail (River Trail)
1.2 miles. This hike is ideal if you want to see some natural waterfalls in Monteverde National Park.
Chomogo Trail
1.1 miles. To hike this route, you must be in good physical shape, as you’ll ascend to nearly 5,500 feet in altitude.
Brillante Trail
1,000 feet. Although it’s a fairly short path, it’s surrounded by bamboo trees which makes it quite different from other hikes in Monteverde Cloud Forest.
Wilford Guindon Trail
0.6 miles. This is a perfect hike for families with children or those who prefer a shorter walk. It features hanging bridges and abundant vegetation, offering excellent photo opportunities.

2. Sky-Tram, hanging bridges, and zip line in Monteverde
Monteverde’s zip lines are among the most famous zip lines in Costa Rica. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, Selvatura is the place to be. This 840,000-acre ecological park offers some of the best adventure activities in Costa Rica.
There are several tours to Monteverde Cloud Forest you can choose from based on your interests. I went for the zip line and hanging bridges excursion, which I found to be the most comprehensive. Besides walking across hanging bridges, you get to choose from 15 different zip lines, offering breathtaking views of the forest from above. I also enjoyed snapping some photos on the Tarzan Swing and visiting one of the largest butterfly gardens in the world.
2. Sky-Tram, hanging bridges, and zip line in Monteverde
If you prefer something less intense, you can opt for this tour that only includes walking across eight hanging bridges. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a pure adrenaline rush, go for this zip-line excursion.
For those interested in riding the Sky Tram, Treetopia Park (formerly known as Sky Adventures Monteverde Park) is the best place. This tour includes the experiences mentioned above and allows you to glide through the treetops in a guided gondola while enjoying stunning views of the Monteverde Cloud Forest.
3. Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve
While the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is more popular, I highly recommend making time to explore the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve as well.
Located at a higher altitude compared to Monteverde Park, it offers unique views, including the majestic Arenal Volcano, one of the most famous volcanoes in Costa Rica. It’s also less crowded, which provides a quieter environment ideal for wildlife sightings.
3. Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve
The Santa Elena Reserve features five different trails that you can explore on your own or with a guided tour. Like in Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, I suggest this guided hike to fully enjoy the views, explore the trails at your own pace, and learn from a knowledgeable naturalist guide. This tour lasts about three hours, which leaves you with plenty of time to enjoy other activities in Monteverde. If you’re planning an ecotour in Costa Rica, don’t miss this extraordinary place.
4. The Children’s Eternal Forest Private Reserve
Another excursion in Costa Rica that you simply cannot miss is this guided tour through The Children’s Eternal Forest (Bosque Eterno de los Niños). This private nature reserve is the largest in the country and is a haven for a wide variety of wildlife and spectacular flora, perfect for nature lovers.

During the tour, you’ll embark on a 4.3-mile route starting at the Pocosol station and ending at a beautiful waterfall. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to spot various species of Costa Rican monkeys, including howler monkeys, as well as wild boars and many bird species. The trail also features a stunning volcanic lagoon that’s sure to leave you speechless. To top it off, you can end the hike with a delicious local Costa Rican dish.
5. Coffee, cocoa, and sugar cane plantation in Monteverde
One of the most fascinating activities in Monteverde is this excursion, where you’ll delve into the process of making coffee, known as “black gold” by the locals. From selecting the seeds to the final brew in your cup, you’ll uncover a culture steeped in tradition. In short, joining one of the coffee tours in Costa Rica is a must-do for anyone who wants to understand the essence of local culture in Monteverde.

Many species are more active after dark, making this tour just as worthwhile as a daytime excursion. In fact, around 80 percent of the animals in Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve are nocturnal, so your chances of seeing wildlife are significantly higher.
You’ll likely encounter mammals like raccoons, two-toed sloths, and armadillos, along with various birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians that hide during the day. This tour offers a fascinating glimpse into the nocturnal world of Monteverde in Costa Rica.
8. Orchid Garden in Santa Elena
Visiting the Orchid Garden in Santa Elena is one of the most delightful things to do in Monteverde. This garden boasts over 450 different species of orchids, with more than 120 species in bloom. Given the tiny size of these flowers, having a guide is essential—you might walk right past them without noticing. In fact, some species measure between 0.4 to 1.2 inches.

The highlight, of course, is reaching the incredible waterfall itself, where a certified naturalist guide will share fascinating insights about the area’s pristine environment.

The entire route is around 3 miles, but if you prefer, you can cover the last 2 miles on horseback or in an all-terrain vehicle. It’s a great way to experience this waterfall in Monteverde without too much strain.

Finally, if you’re looking for a relaxing activity, you cannot miss this guided tour of the Monteverde Butterfly Garden. This guided tour offers a leisurely walk through beautiful gardens, where you’ll learn all about butterflies and their life cycles. You’ll also get to see a colony of leaf-cutter ants transform into butterflies in the breeding chamber.

On the other hand, you will have access to the Hummingbird Garden, where around 14 different species of these colorful animals live. The garden is super pretty, making it a good place to take a walk, take pictures and bird watching.

When you visit Monteverde, you can purchase separate tickets for each of the cloud forests either directly through their websites or at the ticket offices located at the entrances of each reserve.
Below, you can find the details of each, but keep in mind, these tickets are for self-guided tours of Monteverde, so you’ll explore the trails and viewpoints on your own. If you book a guided tour, the entry fee is usually included in the price.
Operating hours and tickets to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
For the Monteverde Cloud Forest, entry is available from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tickets cost $26 for adults and $13 for children up to 12 years old.
The Santa Elena Reserve is open during the same hours. The entrance fee is $18 for adults and $12 for children up to 12 years old.
The Children’s Eternal Forest charges $19 for adults and $12 for children up to 12 years old.
How to get to Monteverde National Park
You have several ways to reach Monteverde in Costa Rica, so here are the options to help you choose the most convenient one for your trip.
By car
If you are planning to rent a car in Costa Rica, keep in mind that while the main road to Monteverde National Park is in good condition, some secondary roads are not paved. During the rainy season, these roads can become almost impossible to navigate.
Therefore, having a 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended, if not essential, to access both the reserve and some of the surrounding places I mentioned in this list. Also, if you’re using a GPS, make sure it guides you along the main roads, as it might take detours labeled as the “fastest” route, which might not be the best option.
By public transport
Using public transportation is another way to visit Monteverde. It’s the cheapest option, but it takes about 5 to 6 hours to complete the journey from San José to Monteverde.
The Transmonteverde bus leaves twice a day. The final stop is Santa Elena’s town center, where most tourists stay, but it makes intermediate stops, so you can check for the one closest to your accommodation.
Shared transport
If you don’t want to drive but also don’t want to spend all day on a bus, you have two options. For a one-day trip, there are excursions that let you see the best of Monteverde in a single day.
If you’re staying for several days, shared transport might be a good option. These transfers are usually done in small vans with air conditioning and provide more comfort than a regular public bus, accommodating up to 10 people. They offer door-to-door service, picking you up from your hotel in San José and dropping you off at your accommodation in Monteverde.
Of course, if you want to travel on a budget, public transportation might be a better option since shared transport costs around $70 per person from San José to Monteverde. It’s even more expensive than day tours to Monteverde Cloud Forest.

If you’re visiting La Fortuna and your next stop is Monteverde National Park, you can get there by car (with the precautions mentioned above) or by shared transportation. The shared transport involves a more complex journey: a van will take you to the shores of the lake in Río Chiquito, where you’ll take a boat to cross Lake Arenal, which takes about an hour. As I mentioned earlier, opting for a day trip from San José is the most practical and comfortable way to get to Monteverde, especially if you prefer not to drive. This tour is well-priced and allows you to make the most of your visit to the Monteverde Cloud Forest, with some interesting stops along the way for a more comprehensive experience.

The road to Monteverde offers spectacular landscapes, so you can enjoy the views throughout the journey. You’ll have opportunities to take photos from various viewpoints and try some delicious fruits at the largest fruit stand in the country.
Once you arrive, you’ll hike some of the famous trails of the Monteverde Nature Reserve. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some wild animals. You’ll also have time to cross the incredible hanging bridges that span the park and enjoy a local lunch to round off this intense day of travel.

The best time to visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is during the dry season, which spans from November to April. However, keep in mind that there’s always a chance of rain due to the characteristics of this unique ecosystem.
