If you’ve ever dreamed of sleeping under the stars, take advantage of your trip and go camping in Fuerteventura. We’ve set up camp on this island several times, and it was a beautiful opportunity to admire the dark skies and photograph the Milky Way.

Also, if you’re not sure where to stay in Fuerteventura, there are great Fuerteventura campsites that offer various services and natural scenery. While wild camping in Fuerteventura is prohibited, there are a few free campsites in addition to the paid campgrounds.

We loved our experience camping on Fuerteventura, and I recommend this alternative accommodation if you want to travel cheaply and try something new. In this guide, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about the best campsites in Fuerteventura, including the services and prices, so you can organize your trip.

Can you go camping in Fuerteventura?

Yes, you can enjoy a Fuerteventura camping trip, but you should remember that you can only camp in designated areas. Some campsites in Fuerteventura are only open during certain times of the year, so you should also keep that in mind.

In general, campgrounds are open through the summer, although some extend the opening season into fall or spring. My advice is to check the websites for the Fuerteventura Cabildo and Town Hall, which publish the opening and closing dates every May.

Can you go camping in Fuerteventura?

Below, I’ll share details about the best Fuerteventura campsites, including opening and closing dates. I’ll try to keep this article updated, but I recommend checking the official website before your trip.

Lastly, take into account that you need a permit to camp in Fuerteventura. I’ll tell you about the process in this guide, so don’t worry.

Campsites in Fuerteventura and where to camp on the beach

The first step in planning your Fuerteventura camping trip is to choose a campground. To help you decide, I’ve compiled a list of the best campsites in Fuerteventura, as well as designated areas where you can camp for free.

  1. Pozo Negro (Antigua)
  2. Pájara Municipality
  3. El Cotillo (La Oliva)
  4. Puerto del Rosario
  5. Betancuria
  6. Tuineje

Pozo Negro, a campsite in Antigua, Fuerteventura

Pozo Negro, in the municipality of Antigua, is the only authorized campground in Fuerteventura. It’s about 20 minutes from the town of Caleta de Fuste, where you can see some of the top attractions in Fuerteventura, like the old castle of Torre de San Buenaventura.

In addition, this area has some beautiful beaches that are perfect for practicing watersports and activities. You can do a kayaking excursion, take a surfing lesson, or try stand-up paddleboarding. Have fun enjoying the ocean and sun during the day, then sleep under the stars at night.

Water sports, something to do while camping in Fuerteventura

This Fuerteventura campsite has 70 spaces for tents and also in case you rent a campervan in Fuerteventura, and it’s open from Easter to mid-September. Be aware that this campground is very popular, so I recommend booking your spot in advance.

Price

If you want to stay at this campsite in Fuerteventura, you’ll have to pay a daily or weekly rate. The weekly price of €15 is the same whether you’re tent camping or staying in a campervan. If you want to extend your stay, it’ll cost €50, and you can camp here for a maximum of 30 days.

Also, Pozo Negro has a clean water supply, and you can fill up for about €10.

Services

This is the best camping site in Fuerteventura since it offers all the services you need for a comfortable experience. These include toilets, showers, drinking water, and electricity, so you should have nothing to worry about.

How to apply for a permit

Remember, you need to request a permit to camp in Fuerteventura. Requests must be made in advance through the Antigua City Hall official website.

Beach camping in Pájara, Fuerteventura

If you want to go camping on a Fuerteventura beach, I recommend going to the municipality of Pájara. This place offers several designated areas where you can immerse yourself in nature, and you can camp here with a tent, a campervan, or a motorhome. The Jandía Peninsula is here, so you will find some of the best beaches to camp here.

Below are my top beaches that I suggest checking out if you want to camp in Fuerteventura:

  • Puerto Nuevo
  • Bigocho
  • Garcey
  • La Solapa
  • Ugán
  • Guerepe
  • La Jaqueta
  • Tabaibejo
  • Baja Gómez
  • Puerto Rico

In my opinion, Pájara is one of the most beautiful places to camp on Fuerteventura, thanks to its gorgeous surroundings. Some of the best beaches in Fuerteventura are located here, such as Ajuy Beach, which is 10 minutes from La Solapa and belongs to a Protected Natural Area with volcanic caves. In addition, the beach has calm waters with practically no waves, so it’s an ideal place to visit as a family.

Moreover, some of the best beaches in Jandía are located nearby, so you can spend a day at the beach, then camp overnight at one of the Pájara sites. My favorite beach is Cofete Beach, which is considered one of the top-rated beaches in Spain. It can be a bit tricky to get there, although this Jeep tour goes to the beach and is one of the best excursions in Fuerteventura.

How to apply for a permit

You don’t need to pay to stay at this Fuerteventura camping site, but you must request a permit through the Pájara Town Hall website in advance.

Dump stations in Pájara

There are campsites in Fuerteventura for tents, campervans, and motorhomes, so you’ll also find dump stations. These are the different collection points in the municipality of Pájara:

  • La Solapa
  • Garcey
  • Ugán
  • Puerto Rico
  • Baja Gómez
  • La Jaqueta

It’s important to use these designated dumping areas so you can keep the natural environment as beautiful as you found it.

Camping in El Cotillo (La Oliva)

El Cotillo is one of the island’s most famous towns with a quiet atmosphere and traditional local customs. Here, you can explore a charming fishing village and try some authentic Canarian food at one of the restaurants.

Camping in El Cotillo (La Oliva)

If you’re looking for places to camp in Fuerteventura, there are several nearby areas where you can do so. I personally love the beaches of El Cotillo, which have fine white sand and inviting waters that make them one of the best places to set up camp.

Besides, if you stay in this area, you’ll be close to some of the main attractions in El Cotillo, like the iconic Tostón Lighthouse. Of course, you’ll still have to reserve your spot in advance, so make sure you apply for a camping permit before your trip.

At the moment, there are a few beaches in El Cotillo that allow camping:

  • Punta Blanca
  • Caleta Beatriz
  • María Díaz

On the other hand, there is a camping area in La Oliva, La Caleta, which is located between Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario. If you choose this campsite in Fuerteventura, I recommend spending some time exploring the Dunes of Corralejo. When we visited, we took this buggy tour, and it was so much fun.

For something quieter, check out the old town or visit one of the beaches of Corralejo, which are stunning. The Grandes Playas de Corralejo are the most popular ones and stretch for several miles, so you can escape the tourist crowds and noise.

Finally, while you’re in Corralejo, you can take this ferry to Isla de Lobos a small islet full of interesting sights.

How to apply for a permit

You can request your Fuerteventura camping permit by going to the La Oliva Town Hall website.

Dump stations in La Oliva

La Oliva has a dump station located in the northern part of the municipality. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and there is also a water filling station that you can use for €3.

RV parking in Puerto del Rosario

There are lots of fun things to do in Puerto del Rosario, so it’s worth adding to your itinerary. If you stay at Puerto Lajas, you’ll be able to park your RV in Fuerteventura while exploring the city since this parking lot is located on Tenesor Street in the Barrio de Fabelo in Puerto del Rosario.

Just keep in mind that the site is only authorized for overnight stays, meaning you can only use this area to sleep rather than camp out. You can’t remove any items from your motorhome, or even open any awnings since it means you’ll be camping rather than parking. If you get caught breaking the rules, you could be fined.

Of course, one advantage of staying overnight here is that the beautiful Playa Blanca is just 1.8 miles away.

RV parking in Betancuria

Another option for those who are motorhome camping in Fuerteventura is to go to the municipality of Betancuria.

There is a parking lot here where you can spend the night, so if you’re visiting the interior part of the island, you can sleep here, then get an early start in the morning.

Camping in Fuerteventura in Tuineje (in progress)

Currently, there aren’t any campsites in Fuerteventura’s Tuineje municipality. However, there is an ongoing project that’s pending approval, and it would allow camping in these areas:

  • El Pajarito
  • Barranco El Roque
  • El Aceitún
  • Los James
  • Agando Beach
  • El Roquito
  • Gran Tarajal

While this project is still in progress, you can get more information about it by visiting the Tuineje Town Hall website.

Other places to camp in Fuerteventura

If camping in Fuerteventura isn’t quite your style, but you still want to stay in a natural environment, there are some alternatives you might like. The island has some beautiful rural homes and accommodations, and they offer more privacy away from the touristy areas.

Other places to camp in Fuerteventura

One that I really like is the Casa Rural Tamasite in Tuineje, but if you prefer a hotel, I recommend the Hotel Rural Restaurante Mahoh, in Villaverde.

Staying at a Fuerteventura campsite can save you a lot of money on your accommodation, but if you’re only camping for financial benefits, then consider booking one of the best cheap hotels in Fuerteventura. This way, you’ll be much more comfortable, and you’ll still save money.

Map of campsites in Fuerteventura

To finish up, here is a map with all the campsites in Fuerteventura that I mentioned. I also suggest taking a peek at our map of Fuerteventura to see the top attractions and points of interest on the island.

That’s it for this guide to camping in Fuerteventura, so I hope you feel better prepared to plan your trip. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or to share your Fuerteventura camping experience. I’d be delighted to read your comments!

Enjoy your stay on this beautiful Canary Island!

Thanks for this article it is so informative! Perfect. I have one question, I have been trawling the websites of town halls across fuerteventura to apply for a camping permit and I cannot find anything! Are there any places that you can go and pitch a tent on the grounds for a fee and be able to use facilities (in the event that I cannot obtain a permit)?

    Many thanks in advance!

    • Ascen Aynat says:

      Hi Christine,
Wild (free) camping in Fuerteventura is prohibited, but you can contact the Town Hall directly via email to ask for a camping permit.
