La Graciosa, nestled in the heart of the Canary Islands, is a petite gem that captivates all who set foot on its shores. Despite being the smallest inhabited island in the archipelago, it boasts an abundance of paradisiacal beaches, lush nature, and breathtaking landscapes. Our two-day getaway to La Graciosa island remains the highlight of our first trip to Lanzarote. It’s an incredibly special and beautiful place that you cannot afford to miss.

As part of the Chinijo Archipelago, alongside islets like Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste, and Alegranza, the island of La Graciosa falls under the jurisdiction of the Teguise municipality in Lanzarote. While officially recognized as the eighth Canary Island, it maintains its dependence on Lanzarote. Even so, seasoned travelers often consider La Graciosa to be one of the best places to visit in Lanzarote, so I definitely recommend visiting.

As one of the best Canary Islands, La Graciosa invites you to explore its countless wonders. That’s why I’ve put together this guide to help you get there, navigate the island, and discover all its attractions. I’d suggest setting aside at least a full day or, if you can swing it, two days to soak in every detail and enjoy your holiday in La Graciosa.

Guide to visiting La Graciosa

This guide is your ticket to unlocking the wonders of La Graciosa island. I’m telling you, reserving a day or two for this island is a game-changer. It’s not crowded like other places, and that’s the secret to preserving its genuine charm and stunning landscapes. Here are the topics I’ll cover in this article:

At the end of this guide, you’ll find a map featuring all the places I mentioned. This way, you can plan your visit more efficiently.

Best beaches in La Graciosa

The beaches in La Graciosa are a true spectacle and a major draw for travelers to the island. What sets them apart from other island beaches is their serene, uncrowded nature, which creates the perfect backdrop for an even more enjoyable experience.

1. Las Conchas Beach, the best beach in La Graciosa

Let’s start our journey with one of the best beaches in La Graciosa Las Conchas Beach. It’s not just one of the best in La Graciosa; it proudly holds its place among the most stunning virgin beaches in the entire Canary Islands.

Nestled at the foot of Bermeja Mountain—a gem I’ll introduce in a moment—it radiates a unique charm that characterizes the northwest region of the island. Stretching about 2,000 feet long and 250 feet wide, it’s surrounded by a captivating natural landscape, offering splendid views of the islet of Montaña Clara.

Las Conchas Beach, La Graciosa holiday

1. Las Conchas Beach, the best beach in La Graciosa

The only consideration for those who visit this beach in La Graciosa is the strong currents and waves that often make swimming a challenging activity, if not risky. Yet, as the tide retreats, natural lagoons form in the sand—a perfect oasis for cooling off, especially for those traveling with children. That said, the allure of Las Conchas lies not just in its swimming potential but also in the captivating landscape it presents as one of the finest La Graciosa beaches.

2. La Francesa Beach, one of the most popular beaches in La Graciosa

La Francesa Beach is an ideal destination, especially for those traveling to La Graciosa with children or seeking a serene retreat. In contrast to Las Conchas, the waters here are notably calm. This, coupled with fine white sand and turquoise waters, creates a paradisiacal setting that’s a must-visit, whether you’re visiting as a couple, a group of friends, or with family.

2. La Francesa Beach, one of the most popular beaches in La Graciosa

Despite a slightly higher number of visitors compared to other La Graciosa beaches, La Francesa maintains a comfortable atmosphere, so you can avoid the overwhelming crowds often found on more popular beaches on La Graciosa island. The rise and fall of the tide carve out natural pools between the rocks, providing additional spaces for a quiet and refreshing swim.

Put simply, La Francesa Beach strikes the perfect balance, offering a tranquil escape without sacrificing the appeal of a stunning shoreline.

3. La Cocina Beach, one of the most peaceful beaches in La Graciosa

La Cocina Beach, a hidden gem near La Francesa Beach, is another one of the finest beaches on La Graciosa.

The best thing about this beach is its prime location, nestled at the foot of the magnificent Yellow Mountain. Besides its beautiful natural surroundings, La Cocina Beach boasts a unique charm, drawing enthusiasts of marine life with its vibrant seabed. If you enjoy diving or snorkeling in La Graciosa, this beach might be the ideal destination for you. The calm waters ensure a risk-free experience, whether you choose to snorkel or simply indulge in a leisurely swim.

The slightly secluded nature of La Cocina Beach adds to its appeal, creating an ideal retreat for those looking for solitude. We spent a morning here, with the beach all to ourselves, and we truly relished the joy of sunbathing and snorkeling in complete serenity.

4. Playa Lambra, a must-see in La Graciosa, Canary Islands

Playa Lambra, also known as Ámbar Beach, stands out as one of the best beaches in La Graciosa, situated near the Arcos de los Caletones—natural arches crafted from basalt stone and volcanic rocks. What makes this beach extraordinary is the vast stretch of white sand dunes that create a captivating contrast with the solidified lava and the turquoise hues of the sea.

4. Playa Lambra, a must-see in La Graciosa, Canary Islands

Like many other beaches in La Graciosa, swimming may not be the most suitable activity here due to strong currents and waves. If you choose to take a dip, I recommend exercising extra caution. If you’re traveling with children, swimming may be too risky, but you can enjoy other activities like playing in the dunes and walking along the sand.

Other places to visit in La Graciosa

Beyond its beautiful beaches, La Graciosa island has a lot more to offer. I highly recommend setting aside some time to discover the hidden gems and charming corners that allow you to diversify and enrich your trip to La Graciosa.

5. Caleta de Sebo and the famous sandy streets of La Graciosa

No visit to La Graciosa in Lanzarote is complete without exploring the vibrant town of Caleta de Sebo. As La Graciosa’s capital and the only town on the island, it should be at the top of your list. This charming town in La Graciosa serves as the arrival point for the ferries that connect Lanzarote and La Graciosa. Plus, it’s among the few places where you can rent a bike in La Graciosa.

5. Caleta de Sebo and the famous sandy streets of La Graciosa

In Caleta de Sebo, you will find tons of diverse and captivating attractions. For instance, you can immerse yourself in the island’s history at the Chinijo Museum, pay a visit to the Church of Carmen, which is dedicated to the Patron Saint of La Graciosa, and wander along the bustling promenade, which is adorned with bars and restaurants offering the most authentic Canarian cuisine.

However, what truly sets Caleta de Sebo apart is its enchanting streets, which are filled with dunes and sand. Anyone who has visited this place would agree that walking along these picturesque streets is one of the best things to do in La Graciosa.

6. Pedro Barba, a beautiful village to visit in La Graciosa, Lanzarote

Another captivating destination you must visit in La Graciosa is the charming village of Pedro Barba. This small town is characterized by low houses with white facades and gardens filled with palm trees, which has made it an icon of the Canary Islands.

6. Pedro Barba, a beautiful village to visit in La Graciosa, Lanzarote

You can reach Pedro Barba by bicycle from Caleta de Sebo – it’s a 3.7-mile ride but it’s definitely worth the effort. The village has a small, serene cove, providing a perfect spot to pause and appreciate the picturesque landscape or indulge in a refreshing swim.

While the houses in Pedro Barba are occupied primarily during holidays and the summer months, the village remains a fascinating destination throughout the year. Trust me; you’re about to encounter a place unlike any other.

7. Arco de los Caletones, a natural monument in La Graciosa

While I previously talked about the Arco de los Caletones located on Lambra Beach, this natural monument in La Graciosa deserves a spotlight of its own.

Arco de los Caletones or “Arch of the Caletones” is a natural stone arch formation crafted from basalt stones and volcanic rocks. If you take a closer look, you’ll see how the ocean’s forceful waves shaped these rocks into the breathtaking formation we see today. This spot is hands down one of the best places to visit in La Graciosa to capture mesmerizing photographs.

However, you should keep in mind that climbing on this arch is strictly prohibited and quite dangerous. The structure is unstable and can support very little weight. Aside from the risk of personal injury, attempting to climb it may lead to breakage, disrupting the natural environment. So, as tempting as it might be to snap a photo on this arch, it’s best to resist the urge and enjoy it from a safe and respectful distance. Let’s keep the beauty of the surroundings intact for everyone to appreciate!

Best things to do in La Graciosa

Beyond the places I mentioned before, there are also plenty of exciting things to do in La Graciosa. Here are my top choices:

8. Climb Montaña Bermeja, the best thing to do in La Graciosa

For an unforgettable experience on La Graciosa island, set your sights on Montaña Bermeja—one of the most popular destinations for captivating tours and hikes on the island.

8. Climb Montaña Bermeja, the best thing to do in La Graciosa

Rising 500 feet above sea level, Montaña Bermeja is not only one of Lanzarote’s most important volcanoes, but also among the most spectacular sites in La Graciosa. As you ascend to the top, you’ll be treated to panoramic 360° views of the island and its surroundings. Feast your eyes on the diverse volcanic formations of La Graciosa, including the Yellow Mountain, Montaña del Mojón, and the peaks of Las Agujas. Plus, you’ll have a chance to marvel at other islands and islets that compose the Chinijo Archipelago, such as the enticing islet of Montaña Clara, perfectly positioned in front of Las Conchas Beach.

While the climb is a bit challenging due to the uneven terrain, the reward is well worth it. It will take you approximately 20 to 30 minutes to hike from the base to the summit.

9. Diving in La Graciosa and the Chinijo Archipelago

If you enjoy diving, a trip to La Graciosa is a must, as it ranks among the finest destinations in the Canary Islands for this exhilarating water sport. With up to 20 dive points and a mesmerizing tapestry of marine flora and fauna, La Graciosa island is definitely an idyllic haven for underwater exploration.

9. Diving in La Graciosa and the Chinijo Archipelago

I recommend exploring the expansive Chinijo Archipelago, the largest protected marine area in Europe, where diving or snorkeling becomes a transcendental experience. This underwater journey allows you to bring home incredible souvenirs from the bottom of the sea.

There is a good chance that you’ll encounter barracudas, moray eels, amberjacks, horse mackerel, angel sharks, tuna, Canary Island lobsters, and a diverse array of marine wonders. So, rest assured that diving and snorkeling in La Graciosa is one of the best activities you can try during your trip. For further details and to plan your aquatic adventure, check out this website.

10. Surfing in La Graciosa, the best thing to do in La Graciosa, Lanzarote

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, surfing in La Graciosa is an absolute must-do. This island is a haven for seasoned surfers, offering numerous spots to chase and conquer waves. However, if you’re a beginner or intermediate surfer without much experience, La Graciosa might not be the ideal place to start. Unfortunately, there are no schools on the island to provide instruction, and the wave conditions are more suited for those with advanced skills.

But if you have already mastered the art, surfing would be one of the best things to do in La Graciosa for you.

How to get around La Graciosa – Explore La Graciosa by rental bike

If you’re wondering about the best way to navigate La Graciosa in the Canary Islands, let me tell you that a bicycle can be your best friend. With its small size, minimal road traffic, and generally flat terrain, the island is a cyclist’s paradise, embraced by both tourists and locals alike.

To put it in perspective, covering the distance between Caleta de Sebo and Las Conchas Beach would take you less than 30 minutes by bike, a significant time saver compared to walking, which could take over an hour. This mode of transportation is particularly ideal if you’re only visiting La Graciosa for a short period, and you are looking for a way to make the most of your time.

Biking in La Graciosa, la graciosa bike hire

How to get around La Graciosa

For bike hires in La Graciosa, you have two options: either rent one in Caleta de Sebo or bring it along on the ferry from Lanzarote. In Caleta de Sebo, consider Mato Bike (located on Calle La Fija, 5) or La Molina Bike (on Mar de Barlovento Street, 2). However, given the prevalence of bike rentals in La Graciosa, you’ll find various other companies dedicated to providing this service. Uruciosa Bike, which we used during our trip, has unfortunately closed.

If you opt to bring your bike from Lanzarote via ferry, remember to specify that you’re bringing a bike when purchasing your ferry ticket. You’ll also find hotels in La Graciosa that offer bicycle rental services.

How to get to La Graciosa from Lanzarote

To reach La Graciosa from Lanzarote, you have to take the ferry. La Graciosa is exclusively connected to Lanzarote by sea, which means there are no airports or alternative routes.

Several companies provide ferry services to Caleta de Sebo in La Graciosa, from Órzola in Lanzarote, or vice versa. You can check Lanzarote ferry schedules on the DirectFerries website. The round-trip fare for the ferry to La Graciosa is €28, which is consistent across different companies.

It’s essential not to confuse these ferries to La Graciosa from Lanzarote with those conducting excursions to the Marine Reserve. On the DirectFerries website, you’ll specifically find ferries for independent travel between Lanzarote and La Graciosa. For guided excursions, you can consider this option, which includes the ferry journey and a guide. Plus, you’ll have enough time for beach activities such as snorkeling, making it one of the best excursions in Lanzarote.

Best hotels in La Graciosa

If you’re spending a few days in La Graciosa, Lanzarote, I recommend renting an apartment in La Graciosa, which will allow you to comfortably stay overnight and enjoy the island for two full days.

Keep in mind that accommodations in La Graciosa are primarily located in Caleta de Sebo. Plus, the number of apartments on the island is limited, so make sure to book in advance.

The best option is La Graciosa Magnolia Evita Beach, which offers fully-equipped apartments for up to four people. These lodgings are situated right by the sea, providing direct access to the beach and a captivating volcanic stone garden.

Camping La Graciosa, la graciosa beaches

Camping in La Graciosa

If you fancy being close to nature, camping in La Graciosa is an option. The El Salado Camping Site is the sole designated area for camping, allowing only tents. While there’s no barbecue area, the site provides bathrooms, showers, and a water supply source. Also, keep in mind that the use of gas and stoves is strictly prohibited. Camping here is free, and you only need to request a permit through the National Parks’ website. For further details, check our guide on the best campsites in Lanzarote.

Best restaurants in La Graciosa

Despite its small size, there are many restaurants in La Graciosa, mostly concentrated in Caleta de Sebo. However, you can also find charming cafes in Pedro Barba. So, if you are planning to spend the day on one of the island’s paradisiacal beaches or explore its attractions, consider bringing your own food and drinks.

In Pedro Barba’s cafes, you can find sandwiches and light snacks. However, for a more substantial meal, especially if you enjoy seafood, head to the restaurants in Caleta de Sebo. Here, you’ll discover unique offerings like moray eel and bocinegro (red porgy), not commonly found elsewhere.

If you’re in the mood for some fish, I recommend Casa Enriqueta, El Marinero, and El Varadero as the top restaurants in La Graciosa. These establishments not only specialize in seafood but also offer a chance to savor the most authentic Canarian cuisine.
